What to Expect This Mosquito Season

Mandurah's waterways, wetlands and natural environment are part of what makes our city special. They also provide and support ideal conditions for saltmarsh mosquitoes.

As the weather warms up, mosquito numbers can increase, particularly when tides and temperatures create favourable breeding conditions.

While mosquito management helps reduce mosquito populations and the risk of mosquito-borne disease, it's not possible to eliminate mosquitoes completely from our waterways and wetlands.

Why do the mozzies love Mandurah so much?

The same waterways, estuary and wetlands that make Mandurah unique also create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Saltmarsh mosquitoes thrive in these natural environments, and their numbers can increase quickly after high tides or periods of warm weather.

Because these conditions change from year to year, no two mosquito seasons are exactly the same.

What does the City do to help?

Mosquito management is a year-round program. The City works with the Peel Mosquito Management Group and the WA Department of Health to monitor and manage mozzies across the region, including:

  • Monitoring mosquito populations, breeding areas and environmental conditions
  • Carrying out aerial larvicide treatments
  • Providing information, updates and practical advice to the community

These activities help reduce mosquito numbers and minimise the risk of mosquito-borne disease, while protecting the environmental values of our wetlands and waterways.

What can you do at home?

While the City manages large breeding areas, there are some simple things you can do to reduce breeding around your home and protect yourself from bites:

  • Use an effective mosquito repellent
  • Wear long, loose-fitting clothing when mosquitoes are active
  • Empty containers that collect water, such as buckets, pots and birdbaths
  • Keep gutters clear and maintain pools and ponds
  • Screen windows and doors where possible

A few simple steps can make a big difference in reducing breeding opportunities and helping you avoid mozzie bites.
